Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy originally developed to help people process traumatic experiences. It is now widely used not only for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) but also for a broad range of difficulties where distressing memories or experiences continue to affect daily life. The approach is based on the idea that traumatic or overwhelming events can become “stuck” in the brain, leaving memories unprocessed and easily triggered in the present.

EMDR works by helping the brain to reprocess these memories so that they are no longer as distressing or disruptive. During sessions, I will guide you to recall aspects of the troubling memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation—those can be side-to-side eye movements, sounds, or taps. This process supports the brain’s natural ability to heal by reducing the emotional charge of the memory and integrating it more adaptively. Unlike traditional talking therapies, EMDR does not require detailed descriptions of the event; instead, it focuses on how the memory is stored and how it can be resolved.

The benefits of EMDR can be significant. Many people find that after processing traumatic memories, their distress reduces and they feel calmer, safer, and lighter. The therapy can also lead to improvements in sleep, mood, and overall wellbeing. Because EMDR targets the root of unresolved memories, changes are long-lasting. People frequently report that the memories are still present but no longer overwhelming, allowing them to move forward in life with greater confidence and resilience.

EMDR can be particularly helpful for:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma or neglect

  • Anxiety and panic attacks

  • Depression and low self-worth

  • Phobias and fears

  • Grief and loss

  • Distressing life events such as accidents, assaults, or medical procedures

Although EMDR is a structured approach, it is always tailored to your needs and carried out at a pace that feels manageable for you. I will first help you develop resources for grounding and emotional regulation before tackling the traumatic memories, ensuring you feel safe and supported throughout the process.

EMDR is not about erasing memories but about transforming the way they are held in the mind and body. By helping you process difficult experiences, EMDR enables the possibility for healing, and a renewed capacity to engage fully with the present.
